If there is excessive play, you could find a pipe with the diameter ( id and od) that works, and tack it in.

When you try the balls, make sure there is room between the top and bottom of the turntable. Checking it is free, taking it apart after the head is in, is a pain.

Woodmanse had cast clips, and turned CCW. Maybe?

If i remember right, the washers on the end of a Dempster 6 or 8 ft pullout tube are very close, or just right. Or go to your local hardware store and look in the drawer marked machine washers.
