Re: My "NEW" pump

This came from my 1918 Duplex catalog: It's interesting to see that they describe it having the effect of shortening the fulcrum...

Re: My "NEW" pump

I guess what I'm trying to ask is, does a pump with this kind of gearing pump MORE water per stroke? Or, maybe, is it designed to lift water EASIER? It might be interesting to see what claims an advertisement from that time would say. I'm going to check some of my old catalogs and see what I can fi...

Re: My "NEW" pump

If I wanted a well pump for my pioneer homestead, why wouldn't I use just a simple/standard pump rather than pay more for the gears and all the parts of this one? I know the grill work is prettier but are there other advantages?

Re: My "NEW" pump

Nice pumps, Wayne!
I don't remember seeing these gear "attachments" in old catalogs, are they meant to ease the lift? Is that also the idea for the weight on the handle?

Re: My "NEW" pump

Gosh, maybe I should have left that smell alone; I wouldn't want anyone to think my pump isn't ancient! Later today when I'm supposed to be doing something else, I'll sneak into the workshop and saw a piece of wood for a quick handle just to see how the rollers, etc. work.... My pictures were taken...

My "NEW" pump

I promised myself that I wouldn't look at FB Marketplace for awhile: Well, that promise only lasted an hour, or maybe, two! So, I went and bought a pump that I've never seen before and I don't know how it works either. For a change, nothing seems broken, but while we drove it home, it sure smelled ...

Beatty Windmill Regulator

I've restored and use several US-made regulators and after watching the video on a Beatty regulator at Alec Peirce's Ranch, I've decided that I really need one! Anybody have one for sale? Anyone coming to the Trade Fair with one? (I'd prefer a complete one, but would consider all others...)

Re: Degreaser

Several months ago I bought a 14' Southern Cross that was COMPLETELY filled with grease and then I COMPLETELY underestimated the amount of time it would take to clean it out. With two rolls of paper towels, a garbage bag of clean rags, a putty knife, and close to six miserable hours, I got things c...

Re: I "don't need to take pictures!"....

Windy, When you say, "the gears in backwards", are you talking about the pinion gears? I haven't even loosened the large gears but I'm pretty sure that when I put the pinion gears back on the shaft, they got mixed up (as far as which direction they travel). Only one side of them has the c...

Re: learned how to pour babbitt

The fish butchering machine reminds me that a long, long time ago, I worked with a guy who helped invent skinless hot dogs. He said the crew all worked 8 hours a day in a big refrigerator and wore fishing waders while standing in piles of hot dog meat and it lasted for over 6 months! Finally, they ...
