When changing plunger leathers, does anyone know the advantages or disadvantages of soft vs hard leathers

I would take one or two

They will be for a 6 foot mill.

Looking for a pair of pinion (small) gears for a Fairbury #7. If no one has any but might know where there might be a pair please let me know. Wayne says there is a guy who might be able to machine some. I would prefer to find a pair of useable ones but you gotta do what you gotta do.
