Mike, thanks for the input. Once I get up there and have a chance to check the model numbers and parts availability I'll decide if the whole thing should come down so the kids can paint it or if I can just service it as is. If it's just a spring and some oil and a new vertical piece of wood I'm sure ...

Thanks All for the suggestions and cautions. I will heed the experts here and trust that it would be a wasted endeavor to try and generate useful power.

I will look into rebuilding the platform up there or if the chain around the tower works maybe remove the platform and just use a chain as needed ...

Hi windybob, thanks for all the replies!

I've climbed up to the underside of the platform, the wood looks a little spongey and I didn't have a harness to secure myself while climbing over the edge of the platform so didn't progress and haven't been back up since.
