Re: Powermill in Wisconsin ID help please

Thank you all for the encouragement! Some of the things I've encountered...The tower power shaft is so rusted into the carrier bearings that it's never coming apart. The bearings are cup shaped with the cup facing up. I assume as you climbed the ladder you put oil in the cups. Well a hundred years o...

Re: Powermill in Wisconsin ID help please

I resolved myself to the fact that I can't restore this mill to its original state. Just too many things missing. So, this winter I built what I needed to make this mill function to a degree. It spins...the tail when finished will work as it should...as will the furling mechanism. I've attached a vi...

Re: Powermill in Wisconsin ID help please

Just an update...I posted a video of the tower being lowered...well the last couple of feet of that. It all went exactly as planned. We had a tractor on one side to start the mill over and two trucks on the other side to control the decent...Two trucks because I was afraid of skidding across the gra...

Also...Does anyone have a picture or sketch of the other side of this head. it looks like the tailbone was attached to a casting that was hung on two pins...on the other side of the head must be where the pull-out chain was attached. I'd like to see how that was designed. Thanks!

Re: Powermill in Wisconsin ID help please

IMG_2544.JPG I I think you are correct Dan. The shaft fits the babbit bore and the gears match up pretty well in my hands. This part makes sense now.... The pinion gear un screwed from the head remarkably easy. So now we have a starting point or two for hub/internal gear design also. looking better!

Re: Powermill in Wisconsin ID help please

OMG! Thanks so much for investing the time and effort to identify my mill! What worries me now is finding any more parts either here or elsewhere. I'm also thinking I might not have the budget to really restore this. Having a shop cut gears, gears that we don't have a clue about, seems pretty intimi...

Re: Powermill in Wisconsin ID help please

The other thing...this thing must have been a maintenance nightmare. It looks like it might have had some oil cups at one time to lube the babbit bearings for the two shafts that this had. I'm assuming some open air gears were also involved and then gears in the gear box. No oil bath for the gear bo...
