Re: Star 37
I have never seen evidence or literature mentioning using the Star 12 wheel on the 37's, but Kenneth's mill seems to have what appears to be a "factory" option. I would love to see that in person and inspect it in detail. I am wondering if there is a possibility that the local jobber may h...

Re: Dempster Vaneless
Jeff: The 1JJ casting number on the mainframe denotes a 10' No. 3 Vaneless mill. It would have had the short tailed horse with the cast lid and weight box. I see the weight box in your pics, but I didn't see the cast lid, part # 87J. Very nice acquisition! I have had my #3 about 95% restored for abo...

Re: Star 37
Ed: I normally use 932 Bearing bronze (SAE660). This is one of most common grades for bushings and bearings.

Re: Star 37
Kenneth: F&W used both Timken bearing and High graphite Cast Iron bearings in the Model 37's. They may have used babbitt, but I have never seen any reference to it or evidence on the 37's. I will guess that the bearing in yours will look like the original in my picture below. I machined bearing ...

Re: Material for Hub Shaft?
Most of the original mills used a soft mild steel similar to today's Cold Rolled Steel - 1018 grade. I prefer to use something with a little more tensile strength just because. I use either 1045 medium carbon steel, 1144 Stressproof, or 4140 Prehard. Neither one of these grades has a really big diff...

Re: Heller Aller Mod 8
To the best of my knowledge, the model 25 had different bull gear castings than the Model 8, not sure if the pinions were different. I will dig out some catalogs and look into the dates to determine which model was the latest.

Re: Aermotor RA
Here is an interesting piece of literature. I am not sure who sent me this. Right or wrong, I have it titled 1908 Aermotor catalog. Aaron - Do you see anything interesting with the vane? I have a different piece that I copied from a website ... it does not show swallow tail vane at all. Gregguy - B...
