Just had a thought (1st one today!) - the 12A gearbox is taller, would that mean the guide rods are taller and the entire internal mechanism is larger and/or more powerful?

Based on the windmills I see around here, the 12A hype never really caught on.

The 12A was touted as an improved version of the 12 but I'm not seeing all that much difference. I see from the various discussions that the fan and vane were the same but the gearbox was different. What exactly made the 12A "better"? Was the 12A in fact a better windmill? I'm guessing it's not ...

And the smell of a hillside full of blackberry vines after a rain...

Does anyone know who came up with the idea of governing a windmill's speed by having an off-center wheel and a governor spring?
The description in the Field Guide of Perry's development of the Pumping Aermotor says that it used no truly innovative features in governing (pg 38).

My KS friend notes these predate rotary well-driling machinery. He also notes the AZ rig must be an older machine because of the wooden uprights.
