Re: Tip Top question
Aha! Thanks for the excellent info. Love the color-coded mill, I was studying that pic and wondering how it oiled itself.

Tip Top question
Hi Everybody -
Was the TipTop an open-geared mill? Every pic I've seen of a TipTop has no hood and the gears are exposed, but in the "green book" it is repeatedly described as being an oil-bath.
Does "oil-bath" here refer to it perhaps being partially enclosed? That seems unlikely because on pg ...

Re: Wonder tail, Challenge Steel everything else?
Interestingly there was a TipTop about a mile away, so maybe that also demonstrates the Elgin-clustering hypothesis. The owner was really nice and told all about his grandfather putting it up.

Hi Bob -
If you're asking about the Franken-Wonder, it was a few miles northeast of Nunn CO. Let me know if you want more precise directions.

Wonder tail, Challenge Steel everything else?
Hi Everybody -
Out poking around Weld County in Colorado and came across this guy. It's got a Wonder tail, and I suspect a Challenge Steel side vane and governor weight? Did the Steel have a governor weight? The Field Guide mentions a "multiplying lever".
Thanks in advance for any thoughts 🙂
