Re: Fairbanks Morse Model 45- rebuild
Two months gone this year and I'm just getting the chance to touch this thing again. It's been driving me crazy. Finally had some good weather, and a free Saturday. Broke out the little hand-held sandblaster and started cleaning parts. Out in the sunlight, I finally found just the smallest evidence ...

Re: Fairbanks Morse Model 45- rebuild
Well my goal was to get this mill finished and up on my tower by the end of 2020. Didn't happen. The end of my year was...interesting. Most of that seems mostly behind me and/or it's not a surprise any longer so I'm getting a little chance to make some progress again. New Tail Metal- I took my new t...

Re: Fairbanks Morse Model 45- rebuild
Windy, If I was going to be doing any more than the one of these, I'd be buying one myself. But I just won't ever use it after this project. And my sails are in decent shape so I shouldn't need to work on them.

Re: Forum Maintenance - Sunday, Jan 10, 2021
Paul, Thank you for this forum. It seems like a hang out for some very experienced wind mill guys, and a great place to gather information for those of us less experienced. The knowledge and parts I've gathered from this site have been the only things allowing my project to progress at times. And un...

Re: 20’ Samson Model S
Paul gave the motion, I'd like to second it. I'm stalled out on my project at the moment, because life. Watching other windmill projects progress lets me live vicariously, and it keeps me motivated to get back to my own project when the time finally allows.

Re: New windmill well cylinder selection
So does that mean you can pump more water with wood sucker rods than with steel or fiberglass? I imagine the difference is felt more on a deeper well. So other than sourcing the things, what's the downfall to using wood sucker rods?

Re: Fairbanks Morse Model 45- rebuild
Yes it is! And in this case at least, I didn't even realize how easy it was going to be. I was planning on buying some light gauge steel off a coil at a local metal roofing company. Then I was going to lay it out and cut it, either with tin snips, or an angle grinder with a wafer disk. At best, I wa...

Re: New windmill well cylinder selection
Mike- I certainly appreciate the offer. However, that's about a 15 hour drive from my house to yours. But now you threw a monkey wrench in my plans. I was only considering and comparing steel and fiberglass sucker rods. I think I understand the pros and cons of each of them. What are the pros and co...

Re: Fairbanks Morse Model 45- rebuild
I've never understood people shooting at stuff like that. I work for a construction company that does work primarily in the water and waste water industry. We have had several emergency calls over the years to repair bullet holes in municipal water towers. Who's shooting water towers?! If it wasn't ...

Re: Fairbanks Morse Model 45- rebuild
Nothing visible on the tail. A previous owner sprayed everything with an ugly silver paint. Didn't prep it well though so maybe I could get the silver paint off, and expose the lettering below. I do have a picture of the tail though from the parts list I purchased. The plan is to hang my new tail me...
