Monitor L

Generally speaking, this area is for general discussion about windmills, in most cases.

Monitor L

Post by joe herman »

I delivered my Monitor L to the customer in Saskatchewan on
this past Friday. He told me that they get a lot of very high winds.
Is there data available that gives one an idea of how strong a wind
this windmills can sustain without damaging the wood work?
I used poplar witch is a very strong and quite stiff hardwood.
We could not get the mill erected as the customer was not able
to find a picker truck that would work over the Labor Day week end.
This means another 480 mile round trip for me to make sure the mill
gets raised without damage. Don`t think these guys have any experience
putting up windmills.

That's a tough call Joe being the mill is only self furling.i believe the sails originally were cedar which is a hard wood.how tall is the tower

Tower is 30 feet. The land is flat and there is about 20 miles
of low forest on the sides of the prevailing winds. The trees end
about 500 feet from where the mill will stand. The well is 75 feet
deep but there is no cylinder installed yet and don`t know what size the
drop pipe is going to be or how far the water comes up the casing.
I would have provided an oil bath mill but do not have a tower for either the
two heads I have, Towers are hard to come by around here.
I did not know about the high winds when I took on the project.
I lived close to this area when I was young and did not seem to have had
the wind situation. Climate change could be playing a part.

If the tower wasn't so tall they could rope or chain the wheel in high winds. And yes climate change has brought on severe weather.I guess just cross your fingers

I wonder if a vaneless might stand up to high winds better than a windmill with a vane. When they close you open up a big hole for the wind to blow through. With a vaned they turn their side into the wind so the still blows on the side of the fan. That's my thought on this early Monday morning. I learned the hard way don't chain a windmill to keep it from turning something is going to break.

I learned something very valuable this past week !

It's ok to tie the fan to the motor , but , never to the tower !
Yes something will break if tie to the tower.

A friend of mine in SW Oklahoma (mike) has had a monitor up for several years without any damage. No brake just furls it when high wind is expected. In that part of Oklahoma there is not much but fence post to slow the wind down to canada. I learned the hard way years back not to tie the wheel to the tower except temporarily I had a wheel completely destroyed by a big wind . the mill had no way to relieve the pressure and the chain tore the outer band and half the sails off.

We usually furl the mill, and tie the outer wheel band to the tailbone out as far as you can safely reach. The leverage is less out there than it is closer in to the center of the circle. The head can still rotate safely but the wheel won't turn.

There is a way we fasten the wheel to the tower that is harmless, even over time. A topic for another day.
Call Dan Benjamin for parts. P M me for the phone number.

They can handle a lot of wind mine has seen 75+ no problem. D not tie it that is a recipe for disaster, by letting it turn some it releaves some of the pressure
