X-702 rebuild

Post by Kenneth »

I had some time to work on X-702 today.
I bead blasted all of the external parts,
primed and painted them. Not much
progress, but it was HOT here today.
See pics of a few of the parts.

Windy, that is Krylon International Harvester gloss red.
Looks brighter than the IH paint from TSC.

You guys can keep that heat down there!!! Our humidity (and heat) finally left us. Almost need a light jacket in the morning.

Kenneth - How does that Krylon Red hold up? The TSC red is crap, even with the hardener.
Thanks,
Ed

Ed,
I absolutely agree with your statement, no matter what color it is. I bought some Gillespie Coatings IH red for my Monitor V but haven't tried it yet. Have had good luck with Gillespie's paints on previous projects. Downside is shipping is more than the cost of a gallon of paint.

Kenneth,
Nice work, as usual.

The paint from TSC will always loose pressure in the can.
I use rattle cans just because the cleanup is minimal.
As far as the paint holding up, I think the Krylon is better.
Seems in the southern heat, it doesn't matter what paint you
use, it will fade within about 5 years. I once heard of a guy
who suggested using automotive paint. Not sure if that is
any better.

I use Kimble Midwest, or the equivalent MSC Industrial supply spray paint. It's like putting 3 cans of Krylon into 1 can of this. One coat is great, only 2 coats is like throwing a blanket over what your painting. Never seen anything like it.

There are a few places that sell it, like certain hardware stores, coop's or such. If you go here, maybe they can tell you where it is sold in your area. If you buy from them direct, I think it's a case thing.

If you use a rattle can always be sure it is ENAMEL base, not lacquer. enamel has more pigment solids in the can
For longer life against colour fade spray a coat of clear over the base colour has flashed off.
That's my story & i'm sticking with it.
