Greetings, folks...

Post by JeffreyMead1701 »

Happy to be among you! Eastern Iowa guy, here. I've been nuts about windmills since I was a very small child...40+ years. I've never had one, other than miniature models of various scales.

This one stands on what used to be my aunt and uncle's farm (the place was sold out of the family after my uncle died, about 30 years ago):

I never saw it intact...it's been like this since before I was born. But my uncle had to remove the bottom section of the ladder because I tried to climb it at the age of 3 or 4. LOL! I'd really love to find out what make and model it is/was, and someday find a complete one to put up - just for show, no pumping - if I ever live somewhere that would be allowed (apartment living doesn't lend itself to putting up a windmill!).

Anyway...thanks for having me. I'll try to keep the dog off the furniture and the car off the lawn. ;)

Didn't we already decide that was either a Stover M or a Woodmanse 45?

My initial suspicion was the Stover/Samson Model M, and having done a little more research into the Woodmanse 45, I'm pretty sure my initial notion was correct...the hub shown in the "Field Guide..." is slightly different from my photo, and the positioning of the hub on the gearcase also points that direction: the Samson is on the right-hand side, as you're facing it, and the wheel spins clockwise, and on the Woodmanse, the hub is on the left side, and the wheel spins counterclockwise.

So...mystery solved. Now to actually find one! ;)
