I finally tapped out the broken brake rod and screwed in a new steel rod. I might still run a bead of weld around the outside since I didnt go real deep with the threads. I was afraid I would damage the snout tunnel. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Yes, I would touch a welder to it. Nice job.
Memory plant.... Change or clean the air filter in your air compressor! Mine runs 1/4 as much, and tools run better.
