Samson S?

Have a part you can't identify? Did your parts get mixed up in the shop? Curious if that chunk of metal is a part you should keep? Not sure what kind of windmill or tower you have? Post photos of the mystery object here for the community to help identify.

Samson S?

Post by CTXmiller »

Picked this up this evening and I think it is a Samson model S. Is it a S?

Wasp nest in the hub...came with it too.

The Vane doesn't look like the one's in the womdmiller's bible. All the SAmson's I have seen had there name cast into them somewhere, but maybe they were saving labor which means saving money!

Wayne - thanks.
Upon googling the patent numbers on the gearbox, it appears to be a Samson product. The gearbox is one heavy #$&*(.
It came with a bucket of parts of which appears to be Samson...possibly a Sears Champion made by Samson is my best guess.

It's certainly a Stover product, just don't know which one. Between the S and the M I always get confused. I do have a Champion, and it actually says Sears and Roebuck on the cast iron on the bottom of the head. I don't think they all had that.

BTW, Samson was the model name, Stover was the companies name.

Windybob thanks.

This was in the bucket of parts for which I presume is an adapter to affix the turntable to the tower cap. It had “STAR” stamped in it. Hadn’t seen one before.

Hi Guys, I have an adapter plate ( supported an open geared Samson) that came off a Dandy tower. I think Stover were very clever with their marketing, by having an adapter plate to fit just about any tower top. This allowed them to sell a new Samson mill to any customer who had aworn out mill on a serviceable tower.

A Dandy tower top casting is tough to make another brand fit on for sure. Very large hole. We keep adapters on the truck, and I have several in the shop, including Stover tower tops. The help needed to install a Dempster on a H/A tower top last week. Boy that was an easy one for a change. Just put a Dempster turntable on it, with a Monitor (Hambone) neckpipe bushing for the stormstay. Wish they were all that easy.

CTX, I have not seen one of those before. Maybe because we are very light on the F & W stuff here.
