Aermotor 602 and 702 Transition, or....?

Have a part you can't identify? Did your parts get mixed up in the shop? Curious if that chunk of metal is a part you should keep? Not sure what kind of windmill or tower you have? Post photos of the mystery object here for the community to help identify.

Aermotor 602 and 702 Transition, or....?

Post by hwy8 »

A friend just sent me this photo. Did the factory put this together like this? Did the early 702 have the 602 spokes?

They made a special hub #753 (I think that’s the part #) which allowed farmers to use their old 602 wheel w/ V spokes on the newer 702.

Did the factory put this together like this?
Yes as motor only
Did the early 702 have the 602 spokes?
No

The hub is a 723 unique to this, only fits in 702 and has the larger 1.125 shaft

This is the upgrade motor only that was sold to upgrade your 602 with only having to buy the motor. This was the most common, another option was sold with case minus large gears with the 753 bearing to put 602 large gears in a 702 case. The later was probably the best combo of them having the best attributes - 1.125 hub shaft, floating large gears with adjustable stroke, no spoke timing etc

Sorry CTX for the duplication as you got in faster than me even tho I was next in line to reply. With the bump, it got entered twice. Am sure Paul can resolve.

Ron,

Your answer was much more detailed and informative. Plus I got the special hub # incorrect.

Wow! I came to the right place to ask questions!

I'm a beginner so...... Is the 602 hub shaft size different than the 702? Do all 702's have the 1.125 hub shaft?

Just to be sure, if I bought this motor, will the standard 702 replacement bearing be the right one?

I know of a 602 with a broken-up motor but has a beautiful wheel and tail vane that might be available. Am I right in thinking that matching up the 602 wheel/tail is the only reason to own this "special" 702? Is it more practical to find a good "normal" 702 motor and buy new spokes for the "beautiful" wheel and tail?

A602 - 1" hub shaft, 503 hub
A702 - 1.125 shaft, 703 hub
A702 motor with 723 hub, all same except for hub

V spokes and single rivet wheels go back to open gear Aermotors so it is more appropriate to call them single river wheels instead of 602 wheels. And the last two years of the 602 in A & B sizes had 2 rivet wheels and the angle iron tail bone. In general, single rivet wheels are not as strong as 2 rivet wheels.

The smaller hub shaft and the use of spacer washers for end play next to the hub was the biggest weakness of the 602. The 702 advantage of replaceable sleeve bearings was about it. The 602 fixed small gears and floating large gears was a better design for longevity of the bearings even tho they were pour in place.

I would put a single rivet wheel on your 723 hub but that is me

Thanks for the help Ron and CTX....It's interesting to think I can have a hybrid. Even though my machines are just "spinners", I always want them to be "24 hour runners" It's hard to find a machine that hasn't been shot-up around here in MN, so when I find tin that doesn't look like a cheese grater, I start thinking I should own it. I'm somehow comforted when I'm looking for that "next" project but the trouble is, I've got at least 5 or 6 projects to finish before I start the "next" one!!!
