Making leathers

On the old site there was something about this but I didn't save it. I have fooled around with leather some but no expert. I am just going to assume if I am going to make leathers for a 6 inch cylinder I am going to have to lathe a male and female form out of aluminum or brass, then soak some leather and press form? Does anyone know just what grade of leather should be used? I know the old Kalamazoo band saws had leather seals in their hydraulic cylinders much like windmill leathers and people have made new ones of them at home but I didn't see much on any of the machinist sites. I am eventually wanting to put a large cylinder on a big mill pumping off of a pond so I can have a big one and also I got several steam engine water wagons I would like to rebuild. Of course I just love challenging new projects anyway. Thanks for any input.
