Been mulling this over-electricity

Post by Steve in Va »

Ok. So, lots of folks asked me if I was going to generate electricity with my aermotor 702 once it was up and running. I would always respond "no" and explain that the whole purpose of the mill was to convert rotational force into reciprocal force and I would need to reverse that for any kind of generator.

Right up until this week when I was sitting on the porch watching it and mused; what if I installed permanent magnets on the pump rod, ran it through a coil, and relied on Faraday Law to generate current. Rough calcs say it could work. It could conceivably pump water and generate some electricity.

Has anyone chased this? I doubt that it's an original idea so if feasible, somebody has experience.

Simple answer...to slow but don’t let that discourage you from playing with the concept. Whether it’s a linear or rotating generator, it comes down to frequency. Induced voltage is proportional to the time rate of change of the magnetic field and power is proportional to the speed squared. Windmill wheels were used 100 yrs ago and they had 40:1 or more gearing to get the generator speed up. Gear boxes are inefficient and expensive and why they switched to propellers and direct drive or low gear ratios in the mid 20’s.

An 8' wheel in a hurricane is good for about 1.5 h.p. So, your not gunna run the A/C off of one.

But, get some graphite, Beryllium or heavy water and some plutonium. It's all over the markets in N. Korea and Iran. They share an Ebay account. Then use the pump rod to cycle the graphite etc. moderator and some pluto bits into the main plutonium stack. On a good day, you can generate enough heat to make steam, clear the local forests, and eliminate those nasty neighbors.

I used my circular slide rule to figger all this out. Dr. Strangelove did the calcs first, as you may recall, so its not an original idea.

Fission was my paying job for 34 years and i'm kinda over that path. Nobody seemed to appreciate my neutron bug bomb. Not for multi-family dwellings, remove all pets and children, and remove all precious metals.

Did you gone on a lot of fission trips ? I still have all my teeth so I can Chew Noble stuff and 235 or more other things. Gee... No, GE KAPL.

It has been done via diy tinkering, (https://www.practicalmachinist.com/foru ... ll.169676/) & companies are doing so today:

https://www.farmshow.com/a_article.php?aid=22450

Entire power mill buildings are being run with Aermotor multiple blade type, using gear systems (ever since 1888 model came out).

Other makes, too:

Owner of Aermotor investigated one diy farm size dual purpose mill, told tinkerer he ought to patent invention, since his diy design worked, whereas other's attempts have most commonly failed.

Answer in a nutshell: Been there, done that, it's not easy.
