Best material for mandrel for pouring babbit

Post by Kenneth »

What is the material of choice for mandrels when pouring babbit?
Was wondering if carbon steel will work. I am making a jig to repour
the 686 pitmans for X-702 and A-702.

Thanks Kenneth

Hi Kenneth -
I usually just use regular ole 1018 cold rolled ... sooted up from the torch or sometimes wrapped with paper.
Thanks,
Ed

Mister Ed, thanks for your reply. I have 1018 laying around so
I will probably use that.

Kenneth,
I poured my A702 bearing last year using parchment paper, 2 wraps and clearance was just right . No scraping necessary for clearances fitting.
Your wife probably has a roll in the kitchen drawer so no additional cost or trip to the store.

Thanks Mike. I have seen brown paper bag used. 1 wrap.
Wife said she has parchment paper. Will probably use that.

I made a fixture from a spark plug socket and a washer for the 6 ft arms.

I think I used another sized socket for the 8 foot arms, and probably a washer brazed on it. Kind of forgot, hardly ever pour 8 ft 702 arms.

Hey Windy, can you confirm the correct size of the boss of the bull gear
on the 8 ft. arm?

I don't know.... I could measure my pouring fixture, but not with a calipers, I don't have those. Would be a close guess.
Maybe someone can get an accurate measurement quickly.

I have a set of madrels that were made by K-O, there are probably 50 different sizes in a huge steal case but the mandrals themselves look like cast iron? Its in an early engine rebuilding set from probably the 30s? As everyone else, I use cold rolled on windmills.
