Woodmanse Type "S" pre 1903.

Post by jbuck442 »

I am rebuilding a what I think to be a 8 foot Woodmanse Type "S" pre 1903. All the bushings on the pitman arm and both shafts are wood. All are in bad shape. Do anybody know where to get replacements? I am also missing the brake lever are part number #307

As far as the wood bearings if you're Handy and can make your own the best wood i believe is maple. Once made you have to cook them in a light weight oil this impregnates the wood bearings. I hear there expensive to buy.

The bearings are trashed and the shafts are wore uneven. I going to try and true up the shafts on a lathe and make new wood bearings. Does anybody know what clearances I should have?

Many shafts are regular dimention cold rolled. Nothing really special. You don't want a tight fit anywhere. When the weather gets cold, you still want it to be free. These are not "precision" machines. Mass produced, low speed.

Looks like a typical mill that's completely hammered from having so many 'miles' on it. I t's certainly doable. Nice winter project. Some bearings are made from pressed graphite.
