Fairbury for a newbie?

Generally speaking, this area is for general discussion about windmills, in most cases.

Windcatcher530Dan, The seller thinks it is complete so I assume it has all wheel sections and wheel arms, but that is on my list of things I need him to confirm. There should be 6 of each, correct? thanks

I think I have the outer hub that you show broken. Will look tomorrow. You can have it, if it is the same.

Yeah for a $1000 I'd want a wheel with the arms I'd think, and not a train wreck wheel.

CTX miller, the pictures are an amazing help. Please keep them coming if available.
Gregg, the outer hub is a very generous offer. Please let me know if you have one.
All of you are all being so generous with your time and knowledge. I am compiling your questions to ask the seller. Please keep the questions and opinions coming. I am very excited about this opportunity but need to know what I am getting myself into and what would be a good price considering the distance I have to travel to get it. I'm sure you can tell that I'm a first timer.
Many thanks!
John

Oh my. I won't sleep well after reading all this. Unless you REALLY want a Fairbury, drive less miles, and get another mill. Jeff, please help this man out. Disclaimer....I personally don't much care for Fairburys, not that they are bad or anything, it's just I consider them of poor design, and too bulky. I have a bunch, and have never worked on one yet. In my world, everything else comes first. There are many folks who have a hankering for them though. That's fine. A thousand bucks for a severely outdated mill, and driving all that way to get it, will give me really bad dreams at night.
Call Dan Benjamin for parts. P M me for the phone number. IF YOU TALK TO HIM, AND HE HELPS YOU, THEN BUY FROM HIM. IT CREATES GOOD KARMA.

I know of a rancher about an hour and a half away that apparently has two windmills on the ground that he wants to sell. I am told he thinks he can get $3,000 or more for each them. I have not spoken with him and I do not know their details. There is one on also currently one on craigslist located about 3 hours away. It's an 8 foot Aermotor on a 24 foot stand. The stand looks to be recently home built out of angle iron. It also comes with pipe, pump and pump rod, which I really don't need. They are asking $4,800. I do not know if these prices seem realistic, therefore I am hesitant to pursue them. I do not have my heart set on a Fairbury in fact, I had not heard of them before. The Fairbury in question is owned by the estate of a recently deceased acquaintance. The price is not firm, as it seems they would really like me to have the mill. They are fantastic people and I am sure we could revisit the price if need be. I always assumed I would get an Aermotor, probably because they seem ubiquitous, at least to a novice like me.
