I'm trying to make pulling the 3/8 inch steel pump rod a one man job. I think there is a tool called a "pipe dog" that allows the pipe to slide up but stops it from falling back down into the pipe. I see that there are pipe dogs online that handle 3/4 inch- 2 1/2 inch steel pipe but I don't see anything for 3/8 inch. I would like to make it but happy to purchase if that is the wiser alternative.
Thanks for your thoughts and experience.

Re: Pulling the 3/8 inch pump rod
I made a tool that threads into the joint/collar to pull the pump rod with block and tackle.
Made another tool the width of the pump rod to slide under the collar and rest on the casing. This holds the down-hole sections of pump rod while assembling/disassembling rod sections.
Not pretty but functional. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

I think this is what you are referring to. I borrowed this from a neighbor it worked rather well. I just had to give it a light tap with a hammer to make sure it gripped the pipe. I had to give it back to him but now I know what it is o I'll be watching for one.

We use clevices rather than those. A clevice won't slip. Those do, especially on new, slick pipe. We have one on the truck and use only rarely.

Thanks guys,
Bob, I use clevis pins on my tractors but don't know what a clevis is that applies to securing the pump rod.

one of these. We use 2, one for pulling, and one for holding.
