I think that a D aermotor is a 14 footer. Very heavy.

Would a 12 ftr kind of been a basic/average size model? We was offered a smaller 702 but someone here in South Africa with knowledge of windmills said it was used mainly in areas with string winds. If I remember correctly it was a 6ftr. Or is there a model between this small one and the 12 ftr that is the basic/average model?

This 12 ftr is still in working order. A farmer in our Northern Cape Province still use it to pump water for his sheep. The boreholes in that part of the country is quite deep, so on average they would need quite is "strong" windmill.

The bigger the windmill usually meant they had to go deeper for water or had a big bore to get a bigger flow of water. Deep well, more sucker rod more weight so you needed more power from a bigger mill. Bigger bore, more water being pushed up, more weight needing a bigger mill.
