Alwin “Clyde” Eide passed away suddenly on the 10th of June, 2023 in Houston, Texas. He was 97 years of age. Clyde was born in Columbus, Ohio to Alwin Sr. and Mamie Eide on the 16th of June, 1925.

He spent his summers at the family farm in Capron, Illinois and it was there that he grew up with a passion for windmills and what eventually became antique farm implements and machinery. After high school at Columbus North High, he joined the US Navy and served from April 1944 through June 1946 aboard the USS Montcalm during WW2. He graduated from The Ohio State University. At the university he also became an amateur astronomer and was a founding member of the Columbus Astronomical Society. Another one of his passions was model railroading. He was employed by the Timken Company until his retirement.

Clyde was an accomplished writer and was well known as one of the nation’s windmill experts. He enjoyed writing about windmills, farm life in the 1930’s, and his adventures in the Navy. His articles were published in the Windmiller’s Gazette, Farm Collector Magazine, and the National Association of Fleet Tug Sailors magazine, The Towline.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lillian F. Eide and son, Michael A. Eide. He is survived by his 3 daughters, Deborah E. Haines, Sarah Eide, and Christina Eide; his four grandchildren, Meridith Haines, Megan Skye, Jessica Walsh, and Bard Anderson; and by his 3 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of customary remembrances, donations in honor of Clyde may be made to the American Windmill Museum, 1701 Canyon Lake Dr., Lubbock, Texas 79403.
