A windmill I just took down. What brand s it?

Have a part you can't identify? Did your parts get mixed up in the shop? Curious if that chunk of metal is a part you should keep? Not sure what kind of windmill or tower you have? Post photos of the mystery object here for the community to help identify.

A windmill I just took down. What brand s it?

Post by randallbostick »

I am trying to find out what brand of windmill this is I just took down. The top of tower was broke on two legs and head fan was slightly damaged. I want to rebuild and put up on our farm to pump water. Thanks in advance for the knowledge you guys share.

Not sure about this one. I've had X brace wires like that before, but don't remember what kind of tower they came on. This mill is missing it's helmet, and for a long time it seems. This mill turns CCW, and the rib towards the end of the sails look a lot like either Challenge, or Fairbury, altho the rest of the mill sure doesn't. Would like to see the complete tail shape. This mill will be very difficult to get apart, although I have worked on worse. Be a good winter project. The hub reminds me of Woodmanse, and the ladder looks like Dempster. Are you located in the States or in Canada?

Could be a later Woodmanse after they bought out Stover. I think all previous Woodmanse did not have spur gears like this setup. The tail shape of what I can see is curious.

Tailbone appears to be of a welded design. Flint and Walling did that I think. F/W also spun CCW. Anyone think this might be a Star mill?

I wouldn't rule that out. I think I see an oil pump rod, other things match. Just need to see that tail where it attaches to the head, and the shape of it.

It also has likeness to the Woodmanse model 45, not the Fairbanks model, the Woodmanse model. The tailbone looks more like that one than the Airmaster. Also, I stand corrected on the gearing of the Woodmanse. They did have onventional bull gears, not all were the eccentric type.

Here are a few more pictures. The tail frame is welded.
