I'm not sure if this is what your asking or if it will help but here goes.If it's like other gear pumps their are teeth on the pump rod that stinks out of the top of the pump that mesh with the gear teeth on the pump handle and when you move the handle up and down it pulls the pump rod up and down the same as a windmill sucker rod does.That pump rod extends down through a pipe that screws on the bottom of the pedistal pump and down to a pump that screws on the pipe that pumps the water.Some pedistal pumps had a chamber with the leathers in them like a pitcher pump for shallow wells and just a check valve in the well.

If I wanted a well pump for my pioneer homestead, why wouldn't I use just a simple/standard pump rather than pay more for the gears and all the parts of this one? I know the grill work is prettier but are there other advantages?

I guess what I'm trying to ask is, does a pump with this kind of gearing pump MORE water per stroke? Or, maybe, is it designed to lift water EASIER?
It might be interesting to see what claims an advertisement from that time would say. I'm going to check some of my old catalogs and see what I can find.
In the meantime, I put penetrating oil on all of the fasteners and when it comes apart, we'll all have a look at what's inside!
