HELLO BOYS & GIRLS
DOES ANYONE RECOMMEND WELDING DAMAGED SAILS " I'M RESTORING AN 8 FT. SAMSON OILRITE MODEL S . I HAVE STRAIGHTENED SEVERAL OF MY SAILS TO " USEABLE CONDITION " . CAN YOU BEND THEM BACK INTO SHAPE IF THEY ARE WELDED ? SINCE ALL MY SAILS ARE " RATTY " , I DON'T CARE TOO MUCH HOW THEY LOOK . I HAVE STRAIGHTED SEVERAL SAILS THAT MOST PEOPLE WOULD HAVE PROBABLY SCRAPPED . I REALLY DO NOT WANT TO BUY ANY NEW REPRODUCTION SAILS . I KIND OF LIKE THE BULLET HOLES---HA ! I NEED ABOUT 8 USED SAILS , BUT I WILL PLACE A WANT AD IF I CAN . THANK YOU , MIKE IN ARIZONA

Mike,
Would you post some pics of the Model S brake band and the brake system? I need to look at what missing pieces I have on my Model S. Thanks

Re: WELDING DAMAGED SAILS
A few comments on the Stover brake system.... They need to be improved, with a spring of sorts. There is no "give" in the system, and when the brake is tight, and a little more force is put on it, things break. On almost every spare stover I have in the bone pile, they all have broken brake arms, rods, etc. All the Stovers I have worked on, I have put a stiff spring in the system, where when the brake is tight, there is more 'give' due to the spring, and the issue is avoided.
Ya'll consider this when working on Stovers.

Re: WELDING DAMAGED SAILS
in the meantime, since we have changed the subject of this thread, LOL imagine this. Dempster has a spring in the brake system to take up extra pressure, Monitor has one, and Aermotor has one. Stover (s) have none. the whole linkage is solid, so once the mill is shut off, if there more room to pull the furling lever down, there is no extra 'take-up' spring, so things break. Mostly, the brake arm up at the snout.
