felt oil seals

Post by mtblah »

Today I used my babbitt scraping skills to enlarge the center hole in the front seal for the Dempster #12 , same technique as scraping babbitt .

It should fit snug around the shaft. The oil soaking in it does the lubricating, so no need to worry about it fitting too tight. I usually lube them up good while assembling.
Call Dan Benjamin for parts. P M me for the phone number. IF YOU TALK TO HIM, AND HE HELPS YOU, THEN BUY FROM HIM. IT CREATES GOOD KARMA.

HELLO
I'M TRYING TO RESTORE AN 8 " SAMSON OILRITE MODEL S . THIS IS MY FIRST TIME WORKING ON A MILL . I'HAVEN'T HAD MOCH LUCK WITH THE FRONT BEARING RETAINER SEAL ON THIS THING . I TRIED MAKING A NEW FELT SEAL , BUT THE SEAL MATERIAL WASN'T THE RIGHT STUFF . DID YOU BUY A READY MADE SEAL & ADAPT IT TO YOUR DEMPSTER ? I DON'T THINK ANYONE IS REPROING A SEAL FOR MINE . THANKS , MIKE IN ARIZONA

McMaster Carr has felt seals / washers, soaked in oil before installing, works good
