Electrololis rust removal

Post by Kenneth »

I decided to try electrololis for rust removal on my wind mill parts. Has anyone else tried this. If yes how were the results? Here is what I have so far. The tank with 6 anodes, a piece of angle iron to hang the parts from, copper wire connecting the 6 anodes, and a 12V battery charger. See pics. Will let you all know what the result is.

Also this is the tank before cleaning it out.

After 1 hour, you can see the rust floating on top.

some I know who use this also add a washing compound they said from Home Depot, they say it helps and flashes it so it does not rust after removal

Yes. Super Washing Soda. I left that part out. My bad. 1 tablespoon per gallon of water.

I tried it on some diverter cups a few years back and it worked well. Lets us know how it turns out. I like your set up.

The bad thing is, it works on line of site so internal pockets are hard to clean. I put chunks of rebar with a hole drilled in the end all the way around a mineral tub, maybe 3 inches apart and bolt a #9 copper wire around them, use spring clips to hold the rebar. I started out with a battery charger and have moved up to a welder. I put a bit more washing soda in than you do and sometimes I think a touch of Dawn keeps things suspended in the water better.

Well, the parts were in the tank for 20 hours. I guess it did ok at best. I am wondering if this process would do better in warmer weather. The first photo is the parts righteous of the tank. The second photo is the parts cleaned up and dried with a heat gun.

I buy a lot of tools at auctions, most of them rusty so I have used this for several years. The battery charger is okay on pliers and stuff like that but a welder was the only thing that I had real good luck on big things. Heavy stuff like windmill parts is a of weight and my experience is the more pounds the more juice it takes. Of course I didn't have patience to wait days.

I don't mind waiting on the parts. This was my first experience with it. Next time I will let it cook longer.
