Heller Aller bumper spring

Have a part you can't identify? Did your parts get mixed up in the shop? Curious if that chunk of metal is a part you should keep? Not sure what kind of windmill or tower you have? Post photos of the mystery object here for the community to help identify.

Heller Aller bumper spring

Post by babraid »

Hi Everybody-
While visiting my local Heller-Aller I noticed it had a governor spring but apparently no buffer spring. Heller-Aller literature avaliable to me lists governor and bumper/buffer springs for many models, except for the model 28 parts list which only lists a governor spring. However, there's a pic of a 28 vane on the Vintage Windmill Parts site showing what looks like a tiny spring at the base (which may or may not be a bumper/buffer spring).

So possibly there's a bumper spring on this mill but it's too small to see?
Does the 28 have a bumper spring? If so, is it really small?
Could this be a 28?

An Aermotor buffer/bumper spring is pretty obvious.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts 🙂

H/A 28's are strangers to me. I have a bunch of 6, 6.5, 7 and 8s of the regular kind, but no MOD 28s.

As far as I know all Heller Aller mills have bumper springs.

Hmm, maybe the 28 parts list accidentally omitted it...
(I went over and over the list to be sure)

Thanks for your thoughts 🙂

Maybe the bumper spring was part of the tailvane hinge?

Turns out it's a model 8, and I saw a bitty little buffer spring at the base of the vane, and also on YouTube videos of the 8.

So I'm wondering if the Heller-Aller has little buffer springs because of their wheel construction (shallower-cupped blades which apparently don't require a brake?) as opposed to the mightier and more visible buffer springs of the Aermotor and Dempster?

🙂

Might be possible I suppose. Monitor mills don't even have one. Aermotors do, and a common thing is the vane to get bent and caught in the wheel. Go figure.
