Re: 8’ Challenge 27 rebuild
I ended up making a tower for this windmill. It came with the stub hardware (tower cap, turntable/race and stay) and a rough looking stub tower.
I like my towers short, preferably less than 15’ as there are no trees near my windmills. This one is a little over 12’. The shorter height allows me to use my tractor frontend loader as a work platform as well as it helps with a hinged base.
Legs are 2 x 1/4 and 1.5 x 3/16 girts as well as some 2 x 3/8 flatbar. Most of it was left overs from other projects or scrap, but for the leg material which I picked up cheap. My preference would have been 3/16 had I bought the material new. I have a hole punch that says it will pop a 3/8 hole thru 1/4 material, but it is a struggle not to cause a hernia with a 3/8 hole thru 1/4 angle iron, so about 80% of it is welded. I don’t see 2” x 1/4” legs twisting w/o any cross rods.
I had priced galvanized angle and it was high. So I opted to build it and then paint. I probably have about $150 in material and paint in it, plus a Saturday.

Re: 8’ Challenge 27 rebuild
In Western Nebraska they had the short Nebraska stub towers. No trees so no need to stand them tall. Seeing a picture of one is what gave me my idea to put mills on short towers.
