Dempster # 12
New to windmill forum . I will be raising a Dempster 12 and a aeromotor A702 close to a cabin I’m building . These will not be to pump water just rotate and spin safely . This question is about the Dempster . I’d like to leave the crows nest that is on the platform , can I fish a cable or number #9 wire thru the nest giving it room go up the stem pipe connect to the chain somehow and down to a boat winch or a lever and have the mill function correctly ? All the things move and operate good as far as the fan , tail etc . Thanks for having me Peter

Welcome to the forum.
That crow certainly put some work into that nest.
You might consider a rebuild of the gearbox or at a minimum, a very good cleaning as to not regret it when it is in the air, possibly making noise and/or slinging oil.

I looked at the photos again and it might be a challenge to climb onto that platform and over the corner of that platform via an Aermotor corner ladder without a clipped platform corner. The blades will likely hit the crows nest too. The angle iron typically goes inside the tower cap.

Thank you guys for taking the time to respond to my question . I wont be climbing up the ladder to do anything . The plan is to use a crane or stand it up all together , I'm 70 years old and plan on surviving a few more years . What are you referring to as far as the angle iron going thru the tower cap? Thanks again. Peter in Salt Lake
Re: Dempster # 12
The angle iron goes inside the tower cap and not on the outside of the tower cap. That way, the cast iron tower cap is holding the angle iron in position accompanied by the bolt, as opposed to just the bolt the way it currently is.

Thank you I will take a look when I get back up there to see if I can figure out what you’re talking about . It’s the original tower and head but maybe it was assembled wrong .
Re: Dempster # 12
It’s an Aermotor tower adapted to accommodate a Dempster windmill. Nothing wrong with that as many towers get retrofitted to accommodate a different windmill.
I took two photos…1st with the tower angle iron on the outside. It was hard to hold the angle iron and take the photos, but you should get the point.
The 2nd is with the tower angle iron on the inside. I’m guessing someone cut a little off the top of the angle iron before bolting it to the tower cap.
