10 ft Elgin Wonder B windmill restoration
This is Ken Drewery again, I've been searching the internet and forums for some pictures of the 10 ft Elgin Wonder B, When I say pictures, I'm talking about up close and personal so that I can see some details especially of the tail and fan. In my search for pictures I've noticed that there are pictures of just about every windmill out there except the Elgins, especially the larger ones 10,12,14 footers' though I did find a 14 ft one from a couple of years ago, so if any one out there can send me some pictures or links to some it would be greatly appreciated. I have a 10 ft Elgin Wonder B that I've had for about 20 years and finally decided to get it up and running. with a little help from the museum in Lubbock, Tx. got me in touch with Steve Adams in Grandbury, Tx. who hooked me up with Dan Benjamin in South Dakota, all of which have increased my faith in getting all the parts that I don't have, but even these guys don't have pictures of a 10 ft Elgin Wonder B. To be fair to the museum I haven't asked them. Anything you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I would also like some input as to weather I should galvanize the fan and tail to keep it original or I'm kind of leaning towards a RED, WHITE,AND BLUE THEME considering all of the ignorance going on in our great nation currently. The U.S. and Texas flags share the same colors. The windmill will be installed in southeast Texas about 10 miles nort of the trinity river and I-10 east of Houston at my property, so I'm looking for input on how to stregthen the fan blades and still keep it looking original, due to the fact that we do occasionally get huricanes. please leave your thoughts and thanks for any information that you can leave.

furling the tail will work wonders on saving everything on a windmill , furling turns the fan out of the wind

I agree with Mike, you're free to paint it as you like. That being said, I looked to see if I could find a pic of a Model B. I couldn't, but did manage to find a picture of a model A I took in the museum at Lubbock.

thanks for the input, thanks for the picture, it appears that they made some substantial changes from A to B. it looks to me like they went with some lighter parts in the governor pretty cool.it's just amazing to me that you can't find pictures of the Elgins anywhere.

I actually do have pictures of the 10ft Wonder B I put up in CO. I just don’t have the time right now to dig thru 5000 pictures. That was before the modern cell phones so they are actual pictures. I just don’t have any on my phone.

Dan , my guess is the 5K count of real photos are in shoe boxes ! That is where most of us older generation keep them .

I'm obviously not in a hurry, I've only had this windmill for about 15 to 20 years, I'm really just trying to see if they ever put the ribs on the long sides of the blades because I'm putting my mill up at my house and I live about 50 miles north of the Gulf of America, so we get the occasional huricane with 75 to 150 mph winds, just trying to get some pictures to see if the were ever built like that to help reinforce the blades. This is not going to be a functing mill, pumping or airating, just yard art but I do want to try to keep it looking original. That being said, I additionaly don't want to be replacing blades after every huricane. Also would like to hear your thoughts on painting it with a red, white, and blue theme in honor of our 250 years as a country. have you seen some painted and did you think they looked good?Windmillsrus wrote: Fri Jan 23, 2026 12:22 am I actually do have pictures of the 10ft Wonder B I put up in CO.
