Finally getting around to getting a well and windmill on my property. I have so many questions though. Is there any sort of wiki or FAQ?
Here are some of my questions.
I have a line on a locally-built steel tower (I'm still looking for a windmill; buying new is the fallback option). Is the tower-to-windmill interface pretty standard?
What is the best way to anchor the tower?
What about siting the windmill? Elevation varies by around 50' on my 10 acre lot. I would expect that higher is better for consistent wind (but probably a bit more expensive for drilling the well), Are there any guidelines or rules of thumb?
What do you do in winter when it's cold enough to freeze water lines? Do most people just put the brake on, or is there a way to continue to pump when the temp is down in the single digits?
Similarly, what do you do when your tank/cistern is full?
I plan to use the water primarily to water stock, but I'm sure I'll have more than my cows need. Are there good techniques to use the water for irrigation?
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. Windmill to tower interface can be tricky. Best to buy a tower and windmill that were built as one package. Keep it simple. There are a lot of real windmill tech's on the site they can answer most of your question. One is called Windy Bob. Take all he shares with you to heart. There are books out there you have to search for them. Lots of info inside the literature forum.

John , welcome to the wonderfull world of windmills .
several of the people on this site are , or , have been in the windmill trade for a loooonnn, g time , and hear is the best part , willing to share the information with you . best to ask questions than to get lost & spend $ unneccessarly .
as Wayne says , best to buy as a set , tower & motor . The newer the better , unless you want to rebuild and antique and add extra work to your life .
