Heller Aller Mod 8

Post by Kenneth »

Hey guys. I am working on my HA and came across something new to me.
I am taking it apart and on the shafts for the bull gears, on the outer end
It has a freeze plug looking cap. I got that out and there is another plug that
Looks to be a machined plug. Also looks to be soldered in or something.
Can anyone tell me what it is and how to remove it?
The shaft is free and will move, but when I try to drive it from the inside,
It is solid when it hits that plug. See attachment. Any help is appreciated.

I've got plenty of those, problem is, I don't remember that scenario. Took one apart last summer, the only one i've ever taken apart. I will attempt to look thru my bucket of parts and see what the deal is.
Call Dan Benjamin for parts. P M me for the phone number. IF YOU TALK TO HIM, AND HE HELPS YOU, THEN BUY FROM HIM. IT CREATES GOOD KARMA.

Update. I got this gearbox apart today. Turns out, the second plug on that one side
Was nothing more than another freeze plug looking thing like the one on the outside.
Not sure why only that side had 2 cap type plugs. The shaft on that side was seized
Up. After working it back and forth a few times, and some penatrating oil, I was able to
Remove it. I will keep you all posted on the progress of this project. Look for it in the
Project section.

Thanks, Kenneth

Maybe it was in there for spacing purposes. By the way, I think those mills have no bearings in them. What they have are inserts (or) additions where moving shafts go through that have a high graphite content in the cast iron.
I think I will still check that MOD 8 I have at the shop to refresh my feeble memory.
