The "dross " is the only problem , thats the STUFF that floates to the top when it's melted . A wooden stick removes this junk . Thats where the loss comes in , you will be surprised how big that loss really is . Its the residue from the last 100 years of rotating & envrionmental effects .
Also we don't know what the % of materials in the origional is but today babbit is considerable better .
I personaly use Kapp #13 , a lead based babbit, Kapp Alloy & Wire.com , resonable price , fast delivery.

I think it would be fine. I even use tire weights for mills that don't work, except for displays. But I keep the used babbitt seperate mostly.
