This morning I loosely assembled the 6 wheel sections. The curvatures are not true, some better
than others so the exact inside diameter is a guess. I placed some of the better wheel arms where they
would be if assembled. I measured between opposing tips and that was 18 inches. That means a Flint and
Walling or other hub was not used. The wheel looks to be at least10 feet.
Earlier I suggested that 2 heavy metal circles could have been welded to the outside of the hub. Maybe
just metal L clips, and you would need 12. I think a couple say 4 inch circles would be better with predrilled holes to accept the wheel arms/ At least that is my idea. Probably other solutions.
This is going be an interesting project and I hope I can complete it.

I took some numbers from the furling and vane mounting brackets and wonder on what mill
they were used?
Numbers are 1102,1402,2002,2203 and 3202
Just curious.

Those numbers are for a 10ft model 12 Flint and Walling

Must have used a fairly large hub. Wonder what it looked as had to have been attached to
the brake drum. Are there diagrams of how the furling mechanism worked?
I am going to borrow a metal detector and get permission to search the ground where this mill was.
I looked at it when it was still mounted on the tower less the sails. There was years and years of dead
grass to search though and decided not to expend the energy. I acquired it from the young farm couple
who were able to locate the sails and wheel arms, but no hub. They got my name from the owner.
I told them without the hub I would not be able to make a working mill for them. I traded a Flint and Walling tower and a Fairbanks Morse WG for the mill. The Morse is up and spinning freely and they are happy.
I have my work cut out as the sails are in really bad shape, wheel arms bent, vane shot full of bullet holes
and no hub. I also got the Dempster # 14 from the people that had the power mill. Not going to be short of projects for a long time.

Joe take a closer pic of shaft the hub fits on. what's the diameter and is there a key way.also is there threads on the end

I went out and took some measurements.
They are as follows:
Total length 6 and 1/8 inches with first part tapered for 4 and 3/4 from 1,67 inches down to 1.25 inches. Length of thread is 1 and 3/8 inches and 1 inch in diameter. A 1/2 inch wide by about 5/16 deep
keyway runs the full length to the threaded part.
There is a lot of bird dropping residue by the bearing end which may reflect in the 1.67 measurement
Balls in your park.

Ok joe this is what I'm thinking.They used the original brake drum and hub that was on that Axle which was keyed and held on by the outside nut.now wether they used and fabricated the tire rim that went to it for the wheel arms or somehow hooked a 10ft Flint and Walling hub to the axle hub that's a guess.Good luck
