I have found that plumber's putty works for babbitt damming. It's inexpensive and readily available in any hardware store.
Re: Oh No! Babbitt putty hard!
Didn't know that. Thanks!

What is babbitrite? For making a mold to pour bearings?
Re: Oh No! Babbitt putty hard!
Yes. It's a heat resistant putty to block where you do NOT want the babbitt to go. Then you remove it and re-use it again.

Windy - Have you ever tried using felt? The other day I had someone telling me that is what they been using for 50yrs. I had never heard of it before. Sounds like it is the old fashion weatherstrip felt that he is using.
If it works well ... I can sure think of examples where it would be slick. Like for the stinking oil passages on a 602 ... I always have problems screwing the putty up when inserting the mandrel.

Never heard of felt. That's interesting.
I used to have issues with the 602 oil passages also, until I realized that you could leave a gap 'tween the cast and the putty. In fact, it might be desireable.

I suppose window felt is wool and naturally fireproof, just like why they put a wool rug infront of a fireplace? Hat felt is beaver but I am pretty sure what you used to buy at the lumber yard was wool, probably some synthetic now? Have to try that.
