New Guy, thanks for the add- Heller aller question

Post by Howard2244 »

I lost my model 28 heller aller in a tornado and am rebuilding my tower and putting on a model 8. Question-- I have a furling crank that i would like to install- it should fit on one of the legs. the cable connects to a swivel at the bottom of the mill casting-and comes out of the lower pipe connected to the mill casting. If i use steel cable, It would seem incorrect to just run it down one of the legs and pull on an angle. I did not use a crank on my original installation and just put a hook on the cable and connected it to the pump when i wanted to furl the tail-- any thoughts or pictures???

Cranks are usually attached to a leg.

Maybe run a brace across the tower up there under the neckpipe where the cable comes out, maybe a foot down or so. put a swivel between that brace and the neckpipe so when the head rotates, the swivel will allow it. From that brace, run the cable down to the crank on an angle. Where you cable makes the turn from straight to angle, put something with a radius for the cable to ride on so it doesn't kink it and break it.

Thanks Mike. I've needed to do things like that before.

another Question- Is the oil seal on the main shaft a stuffing box? I don't find an oil seal with the proper OD. The bore on my snout is about .820, Its a heller aller or baker run in oil No 8.

If I recall, they did not have an actual oil seal. I will check in a few mins, need to visit the shop this morning, I have one torn apart.
