X-702 hub shaft removal

Post by Kenneth »

Does anyone have any tips to removing a hub shaft?
I have a 12 ton press. I also have a good backup for
The center of the hub. (1 1/2" pipe) Just don't want to
break anything.

Thanks Kenneth

Any time you press something like this, there is that chance. You can always drill it which will gaurantee no cracking. I have pressed lots, and have been fortunate.

Press out the front. Heat the hub gradually while pressing. Do not use an intermediate rod. Unless you wear a ball catcher's outfit. It will take all 12 tons most likely. That's where the heat comes in. Expect a loud POP if it gives. You will most likely jump out of your shorts. Before you start, MEASURE from inside the hub to the hole in the end of the shaft. Do not press the new shaft in with any less of a measurement.

Good luck.

Windy, I know what you mean about the pop.
I pressed one out several years ago and remember
the pop. I thought the hub cracked. I may cut off the
excess and drill out what I can on the mill. Then press
it out. As always thanks for your input.

yep. Oh, if the mainshaft is extremely rusty right inside the hub, the shaft will be swollen and might not come out easily once you break it loose.

Drilling does take more time, but it's safer. Good luck.

I was able to remove the shaft, thanks to Windy's advice
First I set it up on my mill to drill it to relieve it.

Then I center drilled it, drilled it 3/8, then 1/2", then a
3/4" long end mill.

Then to the press where I filed the outer end of the shaft
and pressed from the outside through.

And here is the end result.

Thought I would post my progress on this project.
I had a new shaft turned less the keys as I can mill
the keys on my mill. Here is a pic of the shaft on the
mill after milling the keys.

And this is the shaft off the mill next to the original.

And this is the shaft with a new key I made from key stock.

More to come as I continue on this project.
