I took this A702 in to rebuild and not sure what I am up against.
This gearbox is caked with hard grease. It looks wet but is actually
dry. See Seems to me someone put heavy oil in it. Owner says it laid
on the ground for 20 years. The helmet was caked up on one side
which makes sense as to the heavy oil. Anyone seen this before?

Ken I've seen that on some of the 602s me and my brother rebuilt.we actually had to scrap it off with a knife and heat some of it with a torch.

Yes I have. I've even seen a mill one time that was filled with grease. omg!

The good thing about that, is that they usually come apart easy, albeit really messy. If that was all rust, it would be impossible.

If ya'll got a portable hot dog roaster down there like this




Invert so the babbit will drain out, cook on medium heat for over an hour or until the tar is powder. You will want the motor and hot dog roaster supported so you can be doing better things while roasting

I was told that years ago The farmers would mix a little coal tar in there grease to make it stick to the gears on open gear windmills and farm machines.maybe some mixed alittle in there oil bath mill's.

Grease or oil on an open gear mill gears is a no-no. 90 w in a oiling windmill is a no-no.

lol I had a X702 in the shop one time, and it had a grease zerk in the hub where the plug goes. That was funny. And messy too.

Take it to a machine,where they work on engines. Have them boil it like engine block, will come out clean as a whistle. J.D.
