Another 602 rescue plus a rare find

Generally speaking, this area is for general discussion about windmills, in most cases.

Another 602 rescue plus a rare find

Post by Windcatcher530 Dan »

I just picked up this 602 up in the Catskill mountains and on the way home found this old Dutch mill.

Dan, I just saw those pics on FB. Do you have any of the inside, showing the construction?
Thanks,
Ed

Would be interesting to see the construction to determine age. If old world original ... I would certainly expect to see hand hewn timber frame construction.
Thanks,

Ed from what I was told this Dutch mill was built around 1850 to 1860 by the Dutch Farmer who owned the farm to grind his grain and fellow farmers. The shafts and gears were made from steel.I was told most the steel work is still there.the top part holding the wheel swivels if you look at the pictures you'll see that and the steel shaft.there also was a water wheel off the back of it but was washed away in the early 1900s and part of the foundation. Since then it's been repaired here and there.

Yuck this one is gonna take a while to clean up smells like the farmer added coal tar to the oil like they did to the grease on the open gear mills.Bad idea.

Dan - Better that rust!! Time for a good soak in diesel or some other solvent.
Thanks,
