As long as there is a little tension on the down rod there is no binding .
Maybe I could go down one size link ??

I did install a smaller pull out chain , it even looks better .
Got out the tape and black paint today , made the tail feathers stand out a little better .
This windmill was sold here in town by the local hardware store a hundred years ago .

I would switch to a smaller chain. Much easier and smoother operation. Yup. A smaller chain will pull a heavier load than you might think.
Call Dan Benjamin for parts. P M me for the phone number.

Just a suggestion I would use a smaller chain and one with the twisted links they will move better in the sheaves than the standard type of chain.

Windy , thank you for posting photos of your version of an Ideal Steel paint colors .
It did help me identify the one part I am missing , in photo one the red slide mechanism that the down rod attaches to is what I am missing .
Any chance you have one ?
Or does anyone have a slide assembly that would work ?
I am trying to make a pump under the tower look like its really pumping water .
