Lyon County Kansas barn.jpg
I found this picture on the internet today.
It said it was in Lyon County Kansas.
That is one big mill.

That is a really cool picture. Most likely a power mill. If you compare it to the man on the tailbone I'd say it's at least a 20 ftr.

Probably similar set up to the Double-Header in Ca. I was watching the show last night called "Finding Your Roots". They had a picture of a farm and in the back ground you could see a Halliday. I was sure hopping they would zero in on the picture but they didn't. It was supposed to be some where in Kansas. Thanks Terry

Wouldn't you say it's either a Halliday or a Challenge Sectional?

Its an Althouse Wheeler powermill. Its at the Wiser Ranch here in Kansas. I think the mill disappeared before WW1 but they just tore the barn down recently. I hated to see it go but it had suffered significant wind damage and a partial collapse. This same image in an engraving form was used in several Althouse Wheeler catalogs around the turn of the century.

Thanks for that info! Very important, now that everything is gone, it won't be forgotten.

I will look and try to find all the pictures I have. It was an impressive place. I never found any photos of the inside, I wanted to see how their arrangement was with the shafting and grinders. At one time, I know there was at least 20 of these Althouse mills in Kansas with the vanes and many more of the 16ft and smaller vaneless power mills. It surprises me how rarely they show up in photos, as big of an investment as they were, I would have probably had the family photo infront of it if I owned one.

I knew I had an image or two of an Aermotor price guide for power mills and water pumpers from 1901 and your post made me think of it. Not an Althouse, but I’d imagine $125 was a lot of money for 1901 for any make of windmill.
