A602 windmill brake collar

Post by Gibsonst »

I’m rebuilding an A602 windmill. The ferul ring works correctly but the collar ring that drives the ring up and is activated with the brake handle binds on the mast pipe approx 1/2 way up. It appears to be pushing up at an angle. Anyone have an idea how to correct the problem

Make sure all parts of the upper furl system moves freely. The two cast pieces on the gear box and where the furl rods fit in those cast pieces.A little grease helps. Also make sure tailbone and brake aren't binding.

Thanks for the reply. I don’t have the tailbone installed yet . The upper fuel system works smoothly without binding and has been greased on the mast pipe. The problem is when I pull the brake lever to drive the collar to push the furl ring up the collar pushes up at an angle causing a hard binding on the mast pipe. I can make it go up with a lot of force scraping the mast pipe on one side but then it won’t come down on its own when I release the handle to in-furl and release the brake. Everything seems to work correctly just pushing up at an angle on mast pipe. What am I missing?

Can you send a couple pics of furl system. Unfurled and trying to furl where it gets stuck.

It looks like the furl rod that works the brake isn't fully extending all the way is the brake working?

Install the tailbone/vane and spring and see if that helps out.

Yes the brake works if I push it up by hand or force the collar up with the handle. It appears that the arms that drive the collar up pushes it off to one side rather than straight up causing it to drag hard on one side of the mast. You can see how it screws screws scrapes the mast on one side in the photo. I’ve removed the paint where it’s dragging but it didn’t make any difference. It’s like the linkage doesn’t push the collar straight up the mast but I can’t figure out why
I’ll install the tail bone and vane to see if it makes a difference
