X-702 Pinion Gear Fit

Post by RPinAZ »

I'm in the process of rebuilding an X-702 and was wondering what kind of fit do you guys shoot for with the pinion gears on the main shaft. The ones that came off were very worn and it took about a half hour beating on the main shaft with a drift and a sledge hammer to separate it from the pinion gears. Fortunately, I didn't mushroom the shaft or break the case. I've got new pinion gears but was wondering should they be an interference fit with a sledge hammer, an interference fit with a small ballpeen, a snug fit by hand, or what. I can put them in the lathe and tweak as necessary - was just wondering what was preferred.
Thanks,

They should slide on the shaft, but driving the key in should be firm.

no problem. I usually mark the keyway on the gear tooth to help with lining it up also.
