I've just joined. Hello to all and thank you.

I've just been offered an antique windmill. I can't tell what kind it is, or if there are parts available for it. Attached is a photo. Any help to figure out what it is will be appreciated!

Maybe a model M Stover.

I’d agree a Samson model M. Likely a 6’.

Thank you for the welcome and help. I can see that the brake band is shot and lots of bullet holes to fix; especially the vane. Are there parts to restore these or am I better off passing on this and seeking something more common like an aeromotor to spend time on?

It is rebuildable. I have rebuilt Samson windmills, but not a model M. Dan Benjamin is usually a good source for parts and some others on here as well.

Can you turn the hub? these are notorious for being locked up. If it turns over, that's a great start.

Looks like a great start , all of us seen a lot worse and made them spin again . You are luck as it appears to be complete with fan & tail .

The question about to continue with that one or got to an Aermotor is what do you want it for? will it be a yard ornament , something to look at and enjoy. Or will you want it to pump a well. If I just wanted a yard ornament I would stick with that one. If I was going to be pumping water I'd want an Aermotor.

After 2 months I've finally been able to get my Samson Project home. It measure 6'3" across so I assume that it's a 6 foot Model M. The tower is 24 feet (give or take a few inches). The hub and the "neck" move freely! The case is painted red and has a plate on it that reads 417.101 It looks to perhaps be a sears model!

I now have so many questions. The first is: how does one release the motor from the top of the tower? It's too heavy for me so I'd like to get it off and roll it into the tractor bucket to get it into the workshop.

I'd also like folks perspective on repairing bullet holes and paint, or fix it mechanically and retain the patina. The bullets stuck in the metal are kinda cool.

Finally, I was told that there is someone named Dan B that is an expert on these things. How does one reach him? It would be great to see an assembly manual and/or parts list!
