Aermotor brake band

I am needing to fabricate a new brake band for my 16ft 702 Aermotor, were those just a mild steel strap? I was looking at an 8ft mill and it appears to be as they wrap up in a ball pretty easy. I am not an Aermotor man at all and growing up, I saw enough brake disasters on Fairburys to decide they were better without them but as long as I am fising everything else on this big beast I might as well start out with one. Anyway, I am open any and all ideas and suggestions. The petty cash drawer is not deep enough to order a new one right now. Thanks
