Kenneth & Michael , how tight a fit is the pin that holds the upper & lower tail hinges ? I didnt want to start hammering , yet ?
another surprising feature , the lower shaft bearings are wood , the upper half is babbitt , appearantly this windmill had very little "work " usage as the bearing halfs both look good . The oil boxes still have wool in them and lots of dried up goop .
AND , every bolt is double nutted , is that common for the older mills ? Maybe they hadn't invented lock washers yet ?

Micheal, be careful with that. If I remember, I had to machine the shaft out of mine. That shaft goes into the main frame and held with a square head set screw. The piece on top is what I had to machine out. It pivots when you furl the mill out. If you need help with it, let me know.

My bearing caps were double nutted as well.

Mike,
Mine was a Butler. I do not own a F&W. My Butler double gear was double nutted too and had wood bearings in the pitman arms.
