Generally speaking, this area is for general discussion about windmills, in most cases.

Barn find Bell Hub update

Post by Windcatcher530 Dan »

The Bell Hub i rescued earlier this year I believe is one of the first ones made.when they replaced the spider hub with the bell hub they stamped the end of the shaft. The main frame has a place for both the horizontal and vertical spring which was on the original aermoter. The tailvane is a swallowtail and appears to have the umlaut above the E ? The tailbone was never galvanized.

Dan I acquired one of these when I got my first tower.Everything is badly worn
and 2 sections were missing.I have found a twisted wheel that has enough repairable
sails to make a complete one. I picked up a good brake shoe at the York fair.
I have not done much work on the mill as used the tower for my Aermotor 602
need to find another tower which are as scarce hen`s teeth around here.
My unit I think is an 1897 model. Parts look different.

Yes Joe the latter ones were a little different.Does yours have the timken bearings if so you might be able to find parts. The early ones are impossible to get parts.Theres quite a few 602s on towers around here still.

No Dan it does not.I am pretty sure all parts are there even the vane with few
bullet holes.Might have a lead on some one taking down towers andwill try and
contact him to see what he has.

Very nice Dan. That vane sheet metal is unbelievable (for its age), is the wheel in the same condition?
Thanks,
Ed
