F & W Hub

I am going to start on my power mill. I picked up the right brake drum from Mike in Saskatchewan for
the 1940 Ford Truck rear end that is the heart of this home built power mill. The sails, vane and furling mechanism
are from a 10ft Flint & Walling. Modified to fit on the rear end but hub is missing.
I advertised for a hub for months and have had zero response.
Does any member have the diameter of a 10 foot F & W hub? I need the bolt spacing so I can manufacture a hub
that will bolt to the 10 bolt Ford drum. Going to use 5 1/2" pipe with two round plates welded over the ends.

Joe: I have a 10' Model 12 in the shop for rebuild that I can take measurements off of for you. Let me know what measurements you will need.

Joe I don't know if this hub will work for you it's a 10ft model 24 i don't have the little nose piece that buts up against this hub maybe someone will. The end of this Hub is threaded.

Hi Dan,
No that hub will not work. The hub needs to bolt to the brake drum off a 1940 Ford truck rear end .
Hub needs to have two round heavy metal plates 5 and 1/2 inches apart to accommodate the wheel arms.
The two ends of the arms are the same length so plates will have matching bolt holes.
I propose to weld these plates to a piece of 6 inch outside diameter pipe. Just need to know the inside
diameter of the F & W wheel to get the right center to center bolt holes.
and what diameter to make the hub plates I have the wheel but the inner and outer rims
are badly bent and will need a lot of work for them to form a true circle. Sails are also in rough shape.
I am going to phone Todd this evening as he has a 10ft F&W and can probably get the answers I need.

Sails can be re-rolled, rims can be hammered back in shape. Easier to straighten the rims, if you hammer them flat first. Mark the outside to re-bend them back to semi-circle the right way 'out".

Roll the sails backwards first to take the memory out. Works better.

Yes looks like I will be taking some of the wheel sections apart, have to make a few new sails.
There are a number of frozen parts that will require some effort ,penetrant and heat. Finally getting a bit of free time
to start work on this interesting mill.

Joe I just thought I would show you a picture of this star steel hub. I believe the model 7 and 9 are the same. Hopefully Todd can help you with your project.

All I need is the large diameter and the bolt hole spacing. I have a hub from an eight footer and the
back measures 12 inches and bolt space is 5 and 1/4 inches so a ten footer should be bigger unless they
increased the length an profile of the wheel arms and the hub as well.
I noticed one of the wheel sections has different wheel clips. I guess the builder used whatever he had on hand.

The hub you show could be made to work but shipping would cost way more than the material I need to build my version.
