Ft. Chadbourne

Post by Wayne »

Took a trip to San Angelo this past weekend. A friend in Corsicana suggested I visit Ft Chadbourne. Glad I did. It is on private land and they have done a real great job restoring many of the buildings and have a first class museum on site. If in the area it is worth a visit. When I pulled in I saw this windmll tower. I thought they must have had a big Eclipse on site at one time. I ask the young man giving the tour about it. He said no windmill, they had put it up to hang lights from. Man talk about over kill to hang lights. Than I visited this monument which I thought was worth sharing.

Ft. Concho in San Angelo is another good stop. They closed Ft. Chadbourne and moved to Ft. Concho because of lack of water. San Angelo has murals all over downtown which are worth the time to find and look at. I also visited Miss Hatties Bordello. No working girls just empty rooms with stories. Closed by Texas Rangers in 1952.

Wayne, I think the young man you talked to is mistaken. My brother and I visited last October and really enjoyed the Museum and the buildings. My brother and I had a real good time with the tour guide, If I remember he said he had been there 15 years and was involved if the stabilizing and rebuilding of the walls. I think he said they had a Samson windmill to go on the tower, but it was pretty far down on the work list.

That would make since. It's hard to believe you would go to so much trouble to just hang lights. The other thing I noticed is there seemed to be a pipe coming out of the ground under the windmill, which I'd think would indicate it's setting over a well.

I finished reading my book about FT. Chadbourne and the author said the tower had an Eclipse it. It had came from another area of the ranch. I had a sister die Friday in Elk City OK. Will be going to to the funeral October 15th. Have decided I'm going to take a journey coming home and will be going back to the Fort for a second visit. Also will be going back to the WASP Museum at Sweetwater.
